PLDN Talks – Richard Staplehurst – ‘Finding a purpose in unpredictable times’

WELCOME TO PLDN TALKS! AS WE ALL KNOW, CORONAVIRUS HAS GOT A HUGE CHUNK OF OUR INDUSTRY WORKING FROM HOME AND AS CREATIVES. WE LAUNCHED PLDN TALKS AS A SUPPORT PLATFORM DURING THE OUTBREAK. DAILY, BITESIZE EDUCATIONAL CONTENT FROM CREATIVE MINDS ALL OVER THE WORLD TO KEEP OUR COMMUNITY INSPIRED.

Hi guys. My name’s Rich Staplehurst. I am a creative and brand strategist. I’m an author, presenter, and all-round creative person. And this is my Paradise London talks about purpose, created purpose, and perhaps even personal purpose. I think. Especially given the current situation, a lot of people are going to find themselves in a situation that they weren’t expecting or ever thought they’d be in.

I think a lot of people are going to be at home with their kids now where they would normally have been at work. So they found themselves a new purpose. It might be right teaching their kids, homeschooling. It might be entertaining them, just keeping them out of trouble and vice versa. And I think.

For me personally, what I’ve done during this time is I’ve channelled my energies into creative projects, which have a purpose. So, one is created as a platform to write children’s stories for parents and kids that are now at home. And I also started presenting on a community radio station and why these two things are important is because the first gives a service.

Two parents looking for extra things to do with their kids. Fun and exciting way to entertain each other. It gives me a purpose in terms of actually writing and creating something original every time. So at the moment, I’ve got 51 children’s stories to write, over the next forever long were locked down for.

And the radio show that I do for Headway is, I’m a guest host for a community radio station, which is supporting, those who are in recovery from brain injuries and, their families. So they can’t go outside. They’re stuck at home. It’s all about not letting them feel isolated and that they have someone to talk to and listen to if they’re on their own.

So that for me gives me massive amounts of purpose, but also it gives me a creative purpose to get up and do something. Add to my daily routine emails have dried up day to day work has kind of slowed right down. So it’s now given me a sense of purpose. So I think, for anyone watching this if you find yourself in a position where you’ve kind of like stuck for things to do, you’ve watched the Tiger King, you’ve watched all of your, your TV series is to grab a notepad, write down some things that you’re really interested in, what you could add value to, or perhaps.

Help support and how you can do that from your own home. So, I set up the website and I posted things on Facebook and socials cause it’s the easiest way for people to get the kids’ name and their details to me so that I can then create a story and email it back to them. So I think for me the most important thing at this time is to keep yourself busy.

And try and find your purpose. And if your purpose is just sitting, chilling, taking some time for yourself and getting yourself back in line, find out what your hobbies were before you got immersed and stuck in a real heavy job. Just take some time. Read a book, write a book, write a poem, create some content and share it online cause you never know who is going to want to see it.

Listen. And you know, you never know. Your smiley face might just cheer someone up. Who’s having a really. Really shit time. So, those are my kind of tips for having a creative purpose during this lockdown. So thanks for listening and go and grab a notebook and a cup of tea and jot down some ideas of something creative that you could do.

Check back each day for a new topic, from a new creative – you might learn something useful!
